DTC - Jyllandsringen race report

21 Jun 10

SEAT drivers Jens Møller and Jason Watt claimed victories at rounds five and six of the YOKOHAMA-supported Danish Touringcar Championship at the FDM Jyllandsringen circuit on 20 June 2010. Møller, a long-time DTC driver, secured his first career victory in the series in round five, while former champion Watt triumphed in round six, driving a SEAT León.

Starting from pole in the first race of the weekend, Møller held on to the lead and began pulling away from the pack at the start. However, his gap was soon erased as the safety car was deployed due to drivers going off track further down the order. After the restart, Møller was forced to play defensive from Watt, who had been running second behind his Danish countryman. Møller defended well and eventually started rebuilding his gap to secure the victory 0.7 seconds ahead of Watt. BMW driver Casper Elgaard, who was at times pressuring Watt for second place, completed the podium.

During the second race of the weekend, Kim Morgan Jensen benefited from the reverse grid rule to start from pole. From fifth and sixth on the grid, Elgaard and Watt made great starts driving around the outside of the top four cars: Watt had a stronger run to claim the lead, while Elgaard was running second. Further down the order, round five winner Møller made up three places after the start, climbing to fourth by the end of the opening lap. The SEAT driver then charged after Robert Schlünssen in third but he could not get past the BMW driver.

Elgaard, who had shown strong form all weekend, caught up to Watt as the pair were lapping backmarkers and started challenging for the lead. Watt defended his position hard and went on to secure the victory. Elgaard finished second, followed by Schlünssen in third.

Elgaard’s strong finishes in both races helped him take the top spot in the championship standings, tallying 104 points. Schlünssen and Watt are tied in second place, both on 103 points, only a point behind the championship leader.

Rounds seven and eight of the Danish Touringcar Championship will take place at the Ring Djursland on 14-15 August 2010.
